Looked Like An Errors But It Is Not !

I found this Malaysia Bunga Raya series 2009 20 cents coin from a batch of coins collected by my niece,Sia Zhiau Zhuin. On first glance, it really exhibited a very unique errors that I cannot explain how it was happened.

It took me a couple of days trying very hard to figure out how it was formed. It just cannot be explained with normal minting process.

Not until I recalled a collector who showed me a piece of one cent coin with similar error many months ago. I got him an explanation for his one cent coin which he had paid with quite a hefty some of money.

It was an "error" formed by glue stuck in between two coins. When the glue became dried and solidified, then you separated them, a mirror image of a coin was formed on the glue.

The "error" looked very unique, like it was struck with a fragment of metal stuck on the coin but the weight is same with a normal 20 cents coin.
The "error" can be peel off !
Be more careful and vigilance when you buy an error coin.

One Dollar Blank Used By Malaysia Bunga Raya Series Coins From 1989 To 1996.

Blank also known as a type I planchet.
A blank is a round disk of metal punched from a long strip rolled for the proper thickness of an intended denomination.It will have a rough edge.(Note: All coins have three sides:the obverse,the reverse and the edge.)
Blanks are not intended to be struck,though they sometimes are.

Definition: A coin blank is the metal disc onto which a coin will be struck. The blank is punched in its round form from a strip of machined coin alloy, and then processed through the upsetting mill, which raises the proto-rims on the blank and turns it into a planchet.

A coin blank that doesn't have the proto-rim used to be called a Type 1 planchet. The planchet was called a Type 2 planchet. Although these terms are rarely used in conversation anymore, you will occasionally see them on grading service holders.

TIN COINS OF TERENGGANU

COINS OF TERENGGANU (1725-1800)

Terengganu was an important trading centre in the 14th century. Gold Mas and Kupang coins were minted in Terrengganu. There appears to have been only three varieties of the gold coins. The first, a gold Kupang, was dated 1120 Ah (1708). The second variety consisted of an octagonal gold Mas and the third, a gold Kupang; both of these are undated. Towards the beginning of the 19th century, pewter/tin coins (Keping or Pitis) were introduced. The tin coins of Terengganu were demonetized with effect from 21 march, 1934.

The Terengganu pitis had two shapes i.e. sun-ray shaped and tree trunk shaped, which were made from tin. Both were casted using the lost wax method which was used around 1700. The coins attached to the tree had the inscription of Kali Malik Al-Adil. The coins were modelled in wax before clay was applied around them and there was an outlet for the molten wax. Then the clay was baked. When it was still hot, the molten wax was let out, leaving the impressions behind. Then molten tin was quickly poured into the mould, eventually forming coins. Usually the coins are separated from the trees as soon as they were cast and the branches were melted down for recycling. It was only as a symbol of wealth that people then would carry the whole coin tree.

Duit Syiling Negeri Terengganu (1700-1900)

Terengganu merupakan pusat perdagangan yang penting dalam abad ke 14. Mas emas dan duit-duit syiling Kupang ditempa di Terengganu. Hanya tedapat tiga jenis duit syiling emas tersebut. Pertama, Kupang emas bertarikh 1120 H (1708). Jenis kedua terdiri daripada Mas emas bersegi lapan dan jenis ketiga, terdiri daripada Kupang emas dan kedua-duanya tidak bertarikh. Menjelang awal abad ke-19, duit-duit syiling piuter/timah (Keping atau Pitis) telah diperkenalkan. Duit-duit syiling timah Terengganu tidak sah diperlakukan berkuatkuasa mulai 21hb. MAC, 1934.

Pitis negeri Terengganu mempunyai 2 bentuk iaitu bentuk pancaran matahari dan berbentuk batang pokok, yang diperbuat daripada timah. Kedua-duanya ditempa dengan menggunakan cara cairan lilin yang digunakan sekitar tahun 1700. Duit-duit syiling yang melekat pada pokok duit mempunyai tulisan Kali Malik Al-Adil. Bentuk duit syiling dibuat dengan menggunakan lilin sebelum tanah liat ditempek sekelilingnya dan dibuat satu lubang dengan menggunakan lilin yang telah cair. Kemudian tanah liat tersebut dibakar. Semasa ianya masih panas, lilin yang telah menjadi cair dikeluarkan, tetapi kesan bentuknya masih terdapat pada tanah liat tersebut. Lepas itu, timah yang telah dicairkan dimasukkan dengan segera ke dalam acuan, yang seterusnya membentuk duit-duit syiling.

Biasanya, duit-duit syiling diceraikan dari pohonnya sebaik sehaja ianya ditempa dan batang-batangnya akan dilebur untuk digunakan semula. Tujuan seseorang membawa pohon pitis yang lengkap ialah untuk menunjukkan kekayaannya.

Tin Hat Money or Tampang

As early as the 16th century, foreign traders recorded that tin intended for commerce was cast into tin ingots of fixed weight and used for all major transactions in the bazaar (market place) as a form of currency. The value of each ingot depended upon it's weight, and thus the shape and size of each ingot was of little consequence. Most of the tin ingots were cast in Perak but a small quantity were also cast in the neighbouring States of Selangor and Pahang. These tin ingots circulated extensively in Perak, Selangor, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan over a very long period. They were also acceptable in the neighbouring Malay states in the Malay Peninsula as well as in Sumatra. These currency blocks of tin ingots were used for internal and international trade.

Bidor : Perak Tin Ingot With "Mangosteen Rossette" Design.

The currency denomination of these ingots was based upon the amount of tin that could be exchanged for one Spanish silver dollar (8 Reales). This value varied from time to time and from place to place. The average weight and rate of exchange was 10 Katis (6 Kilos 50 grammers) to the silver dollar (8 Reales) in Perak. In Selangor the rate of exchange was 8 Katis (4 Kilos 840 grammes) to the silver dollar (8 Reales). There were also smaller and lighter tin ingots which were used for minor purchases.

The Tampangs were gradually withdrawn and replaced with the coinage of the Straits Settlements in proportionte values until finally demonetized in 1893.

Tampang Mould
The early ingots were made using sand or clay moulds. At a later stage, the solid tin ingot known as sugar loaf was made using a brass mould with a "mangosteen rossette" design at the top. The tampang was casted by pouring the molten tin into the brass mould. The mould had a handle for the person to hold in casting the tampang.

MATAWANG NEGERI PAHANG, PERAK DAN SELANGOR

Seawal kurun ke 16, pedagang-pedagang asing telah mencatitkan bahawa timah yang hendak diperdagangkan telah ditempa menjadi jongkong-jongkong timah yang beratnya ditetapkan dan digunakan untuk semua jenis urus niaga utama di pasar sebagai sejenis matawang. Nilai setiap jongkong bergantung kepada beratnya dan oleh itu bentuk dan saiz setiap jongkong tidak begitu penting.

Kebanyakan jongkong-jongkong timah ditempa di negeri Perak tetapi terdapat juga sebilangan kecil yang ditempa di negeri-negeri jiran seperti Selangor dan Pahang. Lama-kelamaan jongkong-jongkong timah ini diedarkan dengan meluasnya di Perak, Selangor, Pahang dan Negeri Sembilan. Ia juga diterima di Negeri-negeri Melayu yang berjiranan di Semenanjung Tanah Melayu serta di Sumatera. Matawang dari jongkong-jongkong timah ini digunakan untuk perdagangan tempatan dan juga antarabangsa.

Nilai matawang bagi jongkong-jongkong ini adalah berdasarkan kepada banyaknya timah yang dapat ditukarkan dengan satu dolar perak Sepanyol (8 Reales). Nilai ini berubah-ubah mengikut masa dan tempat. Di Perak, hitung panjang berat dan kadar pertukarannya adalah 10 kati (6 kilo 50 gram) untuk satu dolar perak (8 Reales). Di Selangor, kadar pertukarannya adalah 8 kati (4 kilo 840 gram) untuk satu dolar perak (8 Reales). Terdapat juga jongkong-jongkong yang lebih kecil serta lebih ringan yang digunakan untuk pembelian-pembelian kecil.

Tampang beransur-ansur ditarik balik dan digantikan dengan duit-duit syiling Negeri-negeri Selat yang setara nilainya sehinggalah ia dimansuhkan dalam tahun 1893.

Acuan Tampang

Jongkong yang terawal diperbuat dengan menggunakan acuan dari pasir ataupun tanah liar. Kemudiannya, jongkong pejal timah yang lebih dikenali sebagai "sugar loaf " atau tampang telah diperbuat dengan menggunakann acuan tembaga yang mempunyai corak "tampok manggis" pada bahagian atasnya. Tampang ini diperbuat secara tuangan dengan menuangkan timah cair ke dalam acuan tembaga. Acuannya pula mempunyai pemegang untuk pembuatnya memegang semasa penuangan tampang dilakukan.

Malaysia Thrid Series (M3S) coins dated 2012 were released to public by Bank Negara Malaysia on 17th January 2012. I faced difficulty to find this new coinage before Chinese New Year (23-01-2012). Even today, many Malaysian are still haven't got a glimpse of our M3S coins!

Do you realise that our M3S 50 cents coin looked very much like a Euro 20 cents coin?
From the look;size;colour;weight to the thickness, they were pretty similar.

Folder Cover.

In the denomination of HK$100, the Commemorative Banknote is tinted mainly in red, an auspicious and iconic colour, representing jubilation and passion. The front side of the Banknote features the spectacular Great Wall of China and the grand Bank of China Building in Beijing, symbolising the solid foundations and unique capabilities of BOC given its long history. On reverse side of the Banknote is the modern metropolis of Hong Kong as an international financial centre with the famous landmark - Bank of China Tower. These prominent features provide a perfect representation of BOC as a global brand and the Bank's contribution to Hong Kong's long-term stability and prosperity.

Although the Commemorative Banknote is the legal tender of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, it is not intended for general circulation. All such banknotes are packaged and sold at prices higher than their face values, proceeds generated from the sales of the Banknotes, after deducting the face values and all the relevant costs (including the design, printing, packaging, marketing and distribution, and the like), will all be donated to the BOCHK Charitable Foundation and other charitable organisations of Hong Kong.

The Yuan Shih Kai Dollar.(NGC:AU58).

Christmas eve, in 1914, the Yuan Shih Kai silver dollar was officially issued for the first time. Since then it has made enormous strides and is fulfilling its mission to replace not only the Mexican and other foreign dollars, but also the heterogeneous collection of Chinese dragon silver dollars. After an existence of ten years the Yuan Shih Kai silver dollar has penetrated to even the most out-of-the-way place of China's outlying provinces, and bids fair to remain in popular favor throughout the China.
However, the coining of the new Yuan Shih Kai silver dollar was closely connected to the withdrawal and re-minting of the existing 280 million dragon dollars, the fineness of which was considerably below the new standard. In order to facilitate the introduction of the new coin the China Government arranged that the Bank of China, the Bank of Communications and the official provincial banks should exchange, free of charge, the old dragon dollars against the new Yuan Shih Kai silver dollars. During the period from 1914 to July 1917, about 30 million Mexican dollars were exported from China, and in addition 19 millions were melted by the Mints for re-coinage. Both these measures continued in an extended form during the following five years, thus making room for the new Yuan Shih Kai silver dollar which, by 1919, had succeeded in firmly establishing itself. The dies were distributed by the Tientsin(Central) Mint to the various provinces. In the course of time the dies were worn and had to be either retouched or re-engraved. In this way it happened that many varieties of the Yuan Shih Kai silver dollars were found. It can be stated that, until the end of 1917, altogether there were 184,946,487 pieces of Yuan Shih Kai silver dollars have been struck by the Mints in China.

Beads Made Of Glass

Through the ages, money has become not only as a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a standard of value and a store of wealth but also as a historical document on the culture, religion and tradition of a society. Beads made of glass, cornelian and onyx were regarded as a status symbol and were believed to have special powers. Records indicate that when Chinese traders established trade with Sarawak soon after 10th century A.D., beads were among their goods exchanged for local products like birds' nests, turtle eggs, hornbill casque, bezoar stones and ant eater scales.

Jars, ceramic plates, bowls and brass items were used as a medium of exchange in the hinterland of Sarawak. The big brass cannons, including the miniature ones, were also very popular as barter trade currency in Sarawak, and were used until the beginning of the 20th Century. The foreign silver coins, which were regarded as barter or pawn items were made into belts worn by ladies and sometimes by men of certain indigenous groups of Sarawak during the celebration of auspicious occasions at their longhouses.

Among the old stratified societies of Borneo, rank was expressed in a unit of weight, the pikul. This is based on the amount of brideswealth due to the bride paid in brass cannons, sometimes substituted with weapons and brassware in the form of brass sireh boxes and brass trays. Brideswealth of 9 piculs was the highest while 7 and 5 were moderate but still of high rank.

Sejak zaman berzaman, matawang bukan sahaja menjadi satu medium pertukaran, satu unit perkiraan, satu standard dan nilai harta kekayaan tetapi ia juga sebagai satu dokumen sejarah mengenai kebudayaan, keagamaan dan tradisi masyarakat. Manik yang diperbuat daripada kaca, batu 'cornelian' dan oniks dianggap sebagai simbol status dan dipercayai mempunyai kuasa istimewa. Rekod menunjukkan bahawa apabila para pedagang China mula berdagang di Sarawak dalam kurun ke 10 Masihi, manik adalah salah satu barangan yang digunakan untuk pertukaran bagi barangan tempatan seperti sarang burung, telur penyu, paruh burung enggang, batu kemala dan sisik tenggiling.

Tempayan, pinggan seramik, mangkuk dan bahan-bahan tembaga digunakan sebagai barang pertukaran di daerah pendalaman Sarawak. Meriam tembaga yang besar, termasuk yang kecil juga amat popular sebagai barangan tukaran di Sarawak dan digunakan sehingga awal kurun ke 20.

Duit-duit syiling perak negara asing yang dianggap sebagai barang pertukaran dan gadaian, dijadikan talipinggang yang dipakai oleh kaum wanita, dan kadangkala oleh kaum lelaki, di kalangan kelompok-kelompok tertentu pribumi Sarawak semasa perayaan tertentu di rumah panjang mereka.

Di kalangan masyarakat lama yang bersusun lapis di Borneo, kedudukan dinyatakan dalam unit berat iaitu pikul. Ini berdasarkan jumlah berat hantaran mas kahwin oleh pihak lelaki dalam bentuk meriam tembaga, kadang-kala diganti dengan alat senjata atau barang-barang tembaga seperti tepak sirih dan talam. Hantaran berat 9 pikul merupakan yang paling tinggi, sementara 7 dan 5 pikul dianggap sederhana tetapi masih berkedudukan tinggi.

In the year of 1973, they were 21,400,385 pieces of 1 cent coins minted in Malaysia under the Parliament Series.Two type of planchets were used, they were the copper planchet and copper-clad steel planchet.

Copper planchet may sometimes appears as a split planchet,this is caused by an improper alloy mix or bubbles and/or foreign materials trapped in the material.

Copper-Clad Steel planchet may sometimes appears as a Clad Layer Errors.Those struck before splitting will appear to be all copper on Malaysia Parliament Series,1973 1 Cent Copper-Clad Steel Coin and will be normal on one side and striated with incused mirror image on the other and almost paper thin in thickness.

Blog Niewmismatic Errors Coins Celebrates Its First Anniversary On 14th February 2012.

I started to write Blog and my first post was posted on Valentine's Day in 2011!

Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14. It is a festival of romantic love and many people give cards, letters, flowers or presents to their spouse or partner. They may also arrange a romantic meal in a restaurant or night in a hotel. Common symbols of Valentine's Day are hearts, red roses and Cupid.

NETHERLANDS 2 1/2 GUILDERS AND 3 GUILDERS. (V.O.C.)

Netherlands 2 1/2 Guilders and 3 Guilders(V.O.C. Coinage)

The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) was in control of Melaka in 1641 and occupied it for the next 150 years. Various possessions in Sumatra and Java were under Dutch control. The Dutch also had trade connections with the neigbouring Malay States.

Netherlands 3 Guilders 1791.

Though coin were specially struck for use in the Netherlands East Indies, there were times when there was an acute shortage of coins for use. The Dutch used to import coins of their homeland i.e. Holland for use in these overseas possessions. One of the most popular silver coins of the Netherlands was the 2 1/2 Guilders. These coins circulated widely in the Malay Archipelago and were given local names.
The 2 1/2 Guilder depicting the portrait of King William I and King William III were known as Ringgit Kepala (head ringgit or dollar). The 2 1/2 Guilder of King William II which depicted much of his cranium bare of hair were known as Ringgit Tengkorak (bare head ringgit). The 2 1/2 guilder of the young Queen Wilhelmina were known as Ringgit Nona (young lady's ringgit or dollar). In certain areas, all the Dutch 2 1/2 Guilder were known as Ringgit Ketun. Ketun derives its name from the Dutch silver Ducatoon.

2 1/2 Guilders dan 3 Guilders Belanda (Duit Syiling V.O.C.)

Syarikat Hindia Timur Belanda (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) telah menguasai Melaka pada tahun 1641 dan menakluki untuk selama 150 tahun. Beberapa pemilikan di Sumatra dan Jawa juga di bawah penguasaaan Belanda. Pihak Belanda juga mengadakan hubungan perdagangan dengan Negeri-negeri Melayu yang berhampiran.


2 1/2 Guilders Belanda. (Ringgit Nona)

Walaupun duit-duit ditempa khas untuk kegunaan di Hindia Timur Belanda tetapi adakalanya berlaku kekurangan duit syiling. Pihak Belanda pernah mengimport duit-duit dari dari negara asal mereka untuk kegunaan di tanah-tanah jajahan di luar negeri. Salah satu daripada duit syiling perak Belanda yang paling diminati ialah 2 1/12 Guilder. Duit inin diedarkan dengan meluas di kepulauan Melayu dan diberi nama tempatan. Duit 2 1/2 Guilder yang tertera dengan potret King William I dan King William III dikenali sebagai Ringgit Kepala.

Ways of explaining a Brockage Striking Errors.

A brockage is formed when a coin is not ejected from the press and remains in place while another planchet is struck. The result is that the first coin acts as a die for the second coin and makes an incuse impression of the exposed face. OR

Full Brockage Errors.$/RM 1.(1989-1996). Reverse.

A brockage is an early form of mint error which results from the use of a previously-struck coin as a die. We suppose that this normally resulted from a freshly-struck piece adhering to the punch die as a result of surface tension, or simply the adhesiveness of heated metal; a virgin flan was then inserted on the anvil die and struck with the punch, so that the obverse previously produced by that anvil die appears in incuse as the reverse of the new coin. Eventually the first coin drops from the die and coining proceeds as usual; the flawed pieces escape detection and find their way into circulation.

Full Brockage Errors.$/RM 1.(1989-1996). Obverse.

Full brockage Errors are rare and the most desirable form of the error.

CHINA SILVER DOLLAR 1933 DR.SUN YAT SEN

China Silver Dollar 1933 Dr. Sun Yet Sen. Graded By NGC: UNC Details.

This Republican silver coinage can be considered the new coinage introduced in China by the successful Tung-Meng-Hui (Revolutionary Alliance) led by Dr. Sun Yat Sen in 1911 against the Manchu rule. In march of 1933 the new central mint in Shanghai began producing the standard 1933 Sun Yat Sen silver coin. These coins have a boat on the reverse.

The obverse of this silver coin has Sun Yat Sen's effigy in profile looking toward the left with 8 Chinese characters above meaning: 22nd Year of the Republic.( the date ).

The reverse shows a sail boat with 2 Chinese characters one on the left and one on the right meaning One Yuan (1$) this coin is known as the "Junk Dollar".

There is a similar silver coin dated 1932 ( 21st year of the republic ) The obverse is the same as the 1933 issue but the reverse shows the sail boat but with rays of the risen sun and 3 geese flying over the sails of the boat.

This silver coin was to be the standard issue but it was decided by the Chinese authorities that the risen sun was to similar to the Japanese emblem and that the 3 geese resembled Japanese Zeros ( War Planes). 2,260,000 of these coins were struck in 1932 at the central mint in Shanghai of these 51,000 coins entered circulation before it was decided to stop this issue the remaining coins were melted to make the new 1933 issue.The 1933 issue was also short lived. The new currency reform law of 1933 called for all silver coins to be returned to the banks and exchanged for paper currency. All silver coins were melted and the silver sold abroad with the revenue going for China defenses mainly against the Japanese.

This is another piece of Singapore Copper Cock Token belonged to Mr.Mahadevan. It was encapsulated by NGC grading house with MS63 Red Brown in grade.

Malaysia 3rd Series 2012 50 Coins With Die Chip Varieties.

Yesterday, when I did my Sunday marketing at a wholesale store, I managed to change RM90 worth of Malaysia 3rd Series (M3S) 50 cents Nickel Brass Clad Copper coins from a coin vending machine.They are in UNC condition.

As usual, without fail I flipped through all 180 pieces of these 50 cents M3S coins. I found 28 pieces with Die Chip Varieties.That was 15.55 in percentage.

28/180 pieces Of M3S 50 Cents Coins Were in Die Chip Varieties.

Out of 180 pieces in UNC condition, almost 50% were covered with many nicks or bag marks, 45 % of them were ended up with moderate bag marks and the balance of 5% only can be considered as choice uncirculated coins.

Tangerines or Mandarin oranges toss is a traditional culture popularized by South East Asia Chinese as a means for a single lady to find for her life partner. In the past several decades, the maidens would ride along coastal roads to toss the oranges into the sea with the wish to find a good spouse.

The Mint factory has its share of dirt, grease and other lubricants, and metal filings. A part of he recessed areas of the "1" on the dies was fill up with a combination of this foreign material, preventing the metal of the coins from flowing into the incused areas. This results in weak designs or missing design details. The filled-die coin is one of the two most common types of errors. Filled-die coins are a form of Struck-Through Error.

Tin Coins Of Kedah (1600-1900)

From the beginning of the 17th century, Kedah (which had already begun the manufacture of its own tin cash and copper coin for the market) began to import gold coins from Johor, Patani and Acheh for use in trade as the principal division to the Spanish Dollar. As far as it is known, the gold and silver coins of Kedah were minted under two reigns (one in the 17th and the other in the 18th century) and they appear to have been copied from the contemporary currency of Johor at that time.
During the reign of Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Abidin Muazzam Shah (1710-1733),animal money made of tin was introduced in Kedah. This form of currency was restricted to models of the fighting cock perched on a number of rings attached to its base.

From the few records available, it is known that the fighting cock itself was worth five cents of the Spanish Dollar while each attached ring below added a further one cent to its value. For small purchases, the metal rings were broken off and used as one cent pieces. A few pieces of this tin cockerel on rings were still in circulation as late as the 1850's when each ring was worth 10 pieces of the Singapore Merchants one Keping tokens.

Ring Tin Coins Of Kedah.

Sejak awal kurun ke-17, negeri Kedah (yang telah mula membuat duit-duit timah dan tembaganya sendiri untuk pasaran) mula membawa masuk duit-duit syiling emas dari Johor,Patani dan Acheh untuk kegunaan dalam perdagangan sebagai pecahan utama Dolar Sepanyol. Setakat yang diketahui, duit-duit syiling emas dan perak negeri Kedah ditempa pada zaman dua pemerintahan, (satu dalam abad ke-17 dan satu lagi dalam abad ke-18) dan ada kemungkinan duit-duit syiling ini ditiru daripada metawang negeri Johor pada masa itu.

Semasa pemerintahan Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Abidin Muazzam Shah (1710-1773), duit bentuk binatang yang diperbuat dari timah diperkenalkan di Kedah. Matawang bentuk ini terhad kepada model di atas beberapa bulatan yang dilekatkan di bahagian bawahnya.

Dari rekod-rekod yang didapati adalah diketahui bahawa ayam jantan tersebut bernilai 5 sen daripada Dolar Sepanyol sementara setiap satu bulatan yang melekat dibawahnya menambahkan nilainya dengan 1 sen. Untuk pembelian-pembelian kecil,bulatan-bulatan logam ini dipatahkan dan digunakan sebagai kepingan 1 sen. Beberapa keping duit ayam jenis ini masih di dalam edaran selewat tahun 1850, dimana setiap bulatan bernilai 10 keping Token Perdagangan Singapura yang dikenali sebagai satu Keping.

Johor Riau, The Malay State Tin Coins

This collection was from a big hoard of tin, lead and brass coins discovered in the vicinity of the tomb of Sultan Sulaiman at Tanjong Pinang, Riau Islands in 1987. Tanjong Pinang was once a heaven where pirates stopped to rest and share their loot. This area was also a regular trading port for the Malay Peninsula. The hoard consists of early tin coins of Southern Thailand, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor, Bantam and Palembang. The value of the tin pitis was 3,000 pieces to 1 Spanish dollar.

Duit-duit Syiling Negeri Melayu Johor Riau

Koleksi ini adalah dari timbunan besar yang terdiri dari duit-duit syiling timah, plumbum dan tembaga yang dijumpai berhampiran dengan makam Sultan Sulaiman di Tanjong Pinang, Kepulauan Riau dalam tahun 1987. Tanjong Pinang pada satu masa dahulu merupakan sebuah tempat yang terpencil di mana lanun-lanun berhenti untuk berehat dan membahagiankan harta rampasan mereka. Kawasan ini juga adalah pelabuhan perdagangan untuk Semenanjung Tanah Melayu. Timbunan ini mengandungi duit-duit syiling timah awal bagi selatan Thailand, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor, Bantam dan Palembang. Nilai duit pitis ini ialah 3,000 keping bersamaan 1 dolar Sepanyol.

COINS OF JOHOR (1527-1800)

During the course of the 16th century, the Malay Empire of Johor developed trade coinages in gold that were accepted throughout a large part of South East Asia. These were based upon two denominations, the Mas and the Kupang, which eventually became standardised as the half and the eighth part of the Spanish dollar. Tin cash (or Katun) were also minted locally and were of several types. These were used as small change at the market.

Doits of the Dutch East India Company (VOC)

Towards the later part of the 18th century, the locally minted currency of the Johor Empire was superseded by the copper Doits of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). This was followed by the introduction of the copper coinage of the British East India Company at the turn of the 18th century. Chinese cash coins were also being freely circulated by the Chinese merchants. By the 1830's, all of these coins (including the Spanish silver dollar) became the principal coinage of Johor. The merchant tokens of Singapore (cockerel type, etc.) were widely used in Johor to serve as small change.

Gold and Tin Coins

In the 16th century, the state of Johor issued two gold coins of different denominations; the Mas, equivalent to half of a Spanish Dollar and the Kupang, worth only one-eight of a Spanish Dollar. Tin cash or katun were minted and used locally. The first gold coins were issued during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah I (1527-1564). There were octagonal in shape and inscribed on the obverse with the name of the Sultan and with his title Khalifatul Mukminin (Vice-Gerent of the Faithful) on the revese. This issues ceased with reign of Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah (1722-1760). According to the Anglo-Johor treaty of 1885, all currency apart from the Straits Settlement coinage was withdrawn from circulation.

Sepanjang tempoh kurun ke-16, Kerajaan Melayu Johor telah mengeluarkan duit syiling perdagangan daripada emas yang diterima secara menyeluruh di sebahagian besar Asia Tenggara. Duit-duit syiling ini terdiri daripada dua kadar nilai, Mas dan Kupang yang kemudiannya telah menjadi ukuran yang setara dengan setengah dan lapan bahagian Dolar Sepanyol. Duit syiling timah ( atau katun) juga ditempa dalam negeri dan terdiri daripada beberapa jenis. Ianya digunakan sebagai duit tukaran kecil di pasar.

Doit tembaga Syarikat Hindia Timur Belanda (VOC

Menjelang akhir abad ke-18, matawang Kerajaan Johor yang ditempa dalam negeri diganti oleh Doit tembaga Syarikat Hindia Timur Belanda (VOC). Selepas itu duit syiling tembaga syarikat Hindia Timur British diperkenalkan menjelang abad ke-18. Duit syiling kecil China juga diedar secara bebas oleh saudagar-saudagar Cina. Menielang tahun-tahun 1830an, semua duit syiling ini (termasuk dolar perak Sepanyol) merupakan duit-duit syiling utama negeri Johor. Token-token saudagar Singapura (jenis ayam jantan kecil dan lain-lain) digunakan secara meluas di Johor sebagai tukaran kecil.

Pada kurun ke-16 Negeri Johor telah mengeluarkan dua jenis duit emas yang berlainan kadar nilainya; seMas dinilaikan bersamaan dengan setengah Dolar Sepanyol manakala jenis Kupang hanya bernilai satu per lapan Dolar Sepanyol. Duit timah atau Katun telah ditempa dan digunakan di Johor. Duit emas pertama telah dikeluarkan semasa pemerintahan Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah I (1527-1564). Malaysia New Coins "The Third series" Were Officially Released To Public On 17-01-2012.

Anyone received new Malaysia coins? Asked Lunaticg!

On 16-01-2012, I received the news that Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) make an announcement, the long waited Malaysia 3rd series of coins will be released to the public on the next day, I decided to go to BNM on 17-01-2012 to get some change while planning to buy another set of new banknotes!

On 17-01-2012, 9.45am,when I approached the cashier counter in BNM and asked the lady in charged about the new released coins, she told me with a smiling face,I must go to their appointed agents or commercial banks!

For the next three consecutive days,I had tried most of the Public Bank Berhad branches (PBB is where I have an account), from Kg Attap to USJ to Subang Jaya,they told me they have not receive any new coins yet! Later,I even tried all banks in Subang Jaya, none of them had seen the new coins yet!

The reason why I am so eager to get the new coins,especially the 50 cents is because I had planed to pack my Ang Pau (the CNY red packet) with these new coins in gold colour to surprise all my little friends, and take the chance to educate and advise them to keep these new coins as a hobby!

Not until on 25-01-2012, when I am still celebrating the Chinese New Year in Port Dickson's home sweet home, my good friend Miss Lee L.Y. told me she can help me to get those new coins from a commercial bank in Port Dickson -The Affin Bank Berhad, only in a packed of RM500 is allowed. They cannot release in small amount because their coin counting machines are not calibrated yet.

I decided to get a packet of the 50 cents new coins! Thank you very much to Miss Lee L.Y.

This packet of 50 cents coins was packed on 14-01-2012, just 3 days before the public released with serial numbered : BNM 27348 K. Amounted RM500.(BNM 27348 K RM500. 00 14/01/12).

I decided to keep it as a whole!

My Kampung Farm House In Port Dickson!

My family celebrates every Chinese New Year in Port Dickson without fail! We really love to come back to our Port Dickson home,our home sweet home.Located at cost road,15km away from Port Dickson town. My family farm house was built in 1964, four dragon years ago,a house with wooden wall supported by one meter height of brick wall.

Surrounding my kampung farm house are green plants,flowers and fruit trees. Every morning,beside breathing fresh air,you can also enjoy listening to birds singing and seeing squirrels running around.

Malaysian Army Food And Beverage Tokens.

Two months ago, I received a piece of Copper Token from my regular Blog visitor Mr Mahadevan. He urged me to do some research and try to find out more information on this token.

Upon checked through my own collections, I found three pieces of similar copper tokens.
These were the Malaysian army food and beverage tokens and were being issued after the second World War,believed to be in the late 40's to early 60's.

Weight:7.81gm,Diameter:31.60mm.

There were being used as a ration tokens in the army camp mainly to control the army personal on consuming beer and cigarette.

Weight:10.79gm,Diameter:38.10mm.

My brother worked as a chef in Malacca Terendak Camp in mid 1960's, he told me he had heard of these tokens being used among the Commonwealth army but have never seen one before.

Weight:14.11gm,Diameter:44.30mm.

I was told by a Malacca numismatist, Mr.Boson Goh, he had encounter a batch of these tokens sold in Jonker Street Malacca few years ago.

From Metal Money To Paper Money.

As societies developed, it became apparent that primitive money was inefficient and often impractical. For example,a man paid five hundred head of cattle for a boat could end up spending the greater part of his 'profit' feeding and housing his new herd. Moreover, cattle was not a good store of value and man's wealth could disappear the instant his cattle died.

As man groped for new standards, eyes turned towards metals and their intrinsic value. Metals were rare and, unlike cattle or storks of rice, could be kept for a long time as they were not perishable. Moreover, metals could be easily shaped into readily recognisable shapes and were easily divisible into smaller units.

At first, metals like copper, silver and gold existed side by side with foodstuff and livestock money, with the metal weights being equated to fixed amounts of the foodstuff and livestock. For example, the Babylonians used barley and metal, the Jews had cattle and silver while the Hittites used sheep and silver. Gradually, metals assumed greater prominence and pushed livestock into the outer edges of use.

Starting with metal pieces which had to be weighed and analysed at each transaction man's ingenuity led him to the idea of stamping the ingots with a mark or seal guaranteeing the weight and purity of the metal. But, it was not until around 2000 BC that the first state seal appeared on these bits of metal, together with laws to punish counterfeiting.

From heavy ingots that could only be used in large scale transactions, the next logical step was to divide the ingot into smaller pieces, or coins, each with a stamp guaranteeing weight and purity. The first metal coins in the Western world are believed to have been invented around 650 BC in Lydia (a Greek city-state). These bean-shaped coins were of electrum, a natural mixture of gold and silver. A century later, Croesus, a Lydian king said to be the richest person of the time, found a way to make pure gold and pure silver coins. His coins were stamped with the heads of a bull and a lion.

The right to stamp coins, that is minting, rapidly become a political privilege and was concentrated in the hands of the rulers, with coins even becoming a sort of propaganda newspaper. An examination of the coins of ancient Rome, for instance, will show how emperors used coins to celebrate their achievements, and improve their public image.

As trade expanded within Europe, the fear of robbery and the sheer inconvenience of lugging heavy sacks of coins around gave impetus to the development of banks. With flourishing trade centers springing up in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, it became clear the dependence on rare metals could only restrict growth. The search was on for a new means of exchange.

Towards the end of the Middle Ages, the Bill of Exchange appeared. With these documents, a debtor promised to pay off his debt at a given time and place. These were crucial to the development of banking as they not only increased the availability of money. but when deposited with banks, allowed bankers to create more money in the form in the form of loans.

First Issued Of Banknotes

In the seventeenth century, the Bank of Amsterdam invented the banknote. It collected deposits of coins, assayed them, then issued a note for the amount which could be later exchange for the bank. But it was the Bank of Stockholm that fist issued the banknotes as we know it today-paper money representing a sum, designed to circulate without a time limit-in 1661

However, as with the invention of metal coins, the Chinese had beaten Western civilisation to the use of paper money by some seven to ten centuries. From a form of currency note made from deerskin, China progressed to its first paper notes some time during the Northern Song dynasty (Ad 960-1127). By the time Marco Polo visited the court of Kublai Khan, paper notes made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree, suitably embellished with official red seals and warnings of the death penalty for forgeries, were enjoying universal acceptance in China. However, it took a full three centuries after Marco Polo regaled his contemporaries with tales of Emperor Kublai Khan's paper money for the first banknote to appear in Europe.

With private banks issuing their own banknotes counterfeiting became rampant, leading to bank collapses which rocked financial systems and shook public confidence in banks and paper money. Government after government was forced to step in and restore order, and the issue of paper money slowly concentrated in the hands of the newly created central banks.

The notes and the coins will be available in Bank of Bhutan, Bhutan Development Bank Limited and in the BOB counter at the Paro Airport from October 13^th till 4^th of November.2011

Bhutan's much-publicised royal wedding that will see King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck tying the nuptial knot with his childhood sweetheart Jetsun Pema began on Thursday morning amid chanting of hymns by Buddhist monks in the historical city of Punakha.
Thousands of Bhutanese, including children and women, started thronging the ground near the stunning 17th century fortress in this ancient city, 71 km from capital Thimphu, from various parts of the tiny Himalayan hingdom as early as 5 am (local time), braving intense cold.
Majority of the 71 lakh population remained glued to their television sets to watch the wedding ceremony which was being telecast live on Bhutan Broadcasting Service TV.
The elaborate wedding ceremony, which is being conducted according to Bhutanese Buddhist traditions, began at 4 am with the initiation of special prayers by 100 monks led by His Holiness Je Khenpo, the head monastic preceptor.

JAPAN'S unconditional surrender finally released the people of Malaya from her realm of draconian regime. Britain's resurgent colonial rule over Malaya and her former colonies began when her military returned to Penang on September 3,1945 under the banner of the Allies. But the people of Malaya had been rudely awakened by their ordeal of three years and eight months. For them, the arteries of Britannia had opened and centuries of white supremacy had bled away. The wounds will now never be stanched.

All along, Britain had no intention of releasing the hold of her colonial possessions and lose the lucrative economic avail of Malaya. Under the discreet directions of Churchill's cabinet during the war, the Colonial Office in London and the army department had jointly set up the 'Malayan Planning Unit'. Its fundamental objectives were defined in a constitution prescribed by the General Secretary of the Colonial Office, Edward Gent, which was subsequently forwarded to the Malaya and Borneo Commission for viability studies. While the war was still in progress in May 1944, the cabinet sanctioned the promulgation of British stratocracy in Malaya after the war under the new constitution.

On the day of official takeover from the Japanese, Adm. Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander of SE Asia, announced the installation of the British Military Administration (BMA) in Malaya which would be responsible for the acceptance of the Japanese surrender. The Malayan Peoples' Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) was requested to stay away from the city and its representation in the acceptance of surrender was denied. Undeterred, the MPAJA's Central Committee continued to set up provisional law enforcement corps in various towns and cities all over the country. They seized enemy weapons,confiscated their properties and took on the task of relieving refugees and casualties. Warnings were issued against plunder and pillage; efforts were made to maintain the prices of food ; and law and order was preserved. These positive actions won the admiration and cooperation of the peope and there was no incident in areas under their control. The flags of the Republic of China and the Union Jacks were flown high in cities everywhere welcoming these resistance fighters.

Adm. Mountbatten declared the inauguration of the BMA on September 12, 1945. Although most of the towns and cities in Malaya were already under the aegis of the MPAJA, it did not call upon the populace to stage a coup d'etat to gain independence. The anti-Japanese army was still committed in its allegiance to Britain and most of its member now actually looked forward to peaceful days. But the British were perturbed by its existence amidst the colony and sought ways and means to disarm and disband this fighting force.

The prewar British colonial rule over Malaya was only contingent, based on agreements between Britain and the sultans for their states to come under British protection. Absolute authority had never been assigned over. Postwar, the British accused the sultans of collaboration with Japanese forces during the occupation. Faced with the commination for their treacherous crimes, the sultans of the nine protectorates were rattled into signing new agreements that assigned their sovereign right 'voluntarily' to the King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In this manner, Britain had 'legally' obtained administrative powers in governing
Malaya.

The MPAJA was a formidable armed force, war hardened by more than three years of jungle warfare. It was respected and approved by the people. But the British regarded it with circumspection and attempts were made to appease the freedom fighters. They were invited to take part in the victory parade and were duly commended. At the demobilization parades held in twelve deferent states, each received a gratuity of $350 in recognition of the MPAJA's contribution to the anti-Japanese campaign. Leaders of the MPAJA and MCP (Malayan Communist Party) were given representations in the BMA legislative committee albeit without the right of veto. MPAJA's law enforcement corps established all over country relinquished their position and made way for the BMA. On November 15, the MCP and MPAJA officially accepted the British proposition of disbandment and surrendered their weapons.

On January 6, 1946, a grand parade was held in celebration of the victory over the Japanese on the padang in front of the City Hall. Adm. Mountbatten was present to personally award medals and sashes of commendation to commanders of Force 136 and the leader of MPAJA, Chin Peng and their deserving members. This was a memorable day for the British who celebrated a double-victory - the victories of achieving peace and sovereignty over Malaya.

The source of the JIM $1000-note overprint is unknown. It has the calender of 1946 overprint in red on its face and "V-J" on its back. There are several versions.

It was struck twice (Double Struck),firstly,the 5 Cents denomination and secondly the 1 Cent denomination.They are affectionately referred to as 6-cents.

Of cause,you can call it a Double Denominations Errors as well.

The thickness and diameter of the two denomination are not much of different, i.e.thickness for the 1 cent=1.25mm vs 5 cents=1.04mm and diameter: 1 cent=17.78mm vs 5 cents =16.25mm respectively.

On the night of 10 August 1945, Japan expressed her acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration and willingness to surrender.On 15 August,Emperor Horohito went on Radio Tokyo to declare the termination of war and ordered all Japanese to lay down their arms.The Allies accepted the unconditional surrender and all offensive actions were ended.The formal instrument of surrender was singed abroad the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945.

The Allies proclaimed 15 August as V-J DAY (VICTORY OVER JAPAN),in commemoration of the end of the Pacific war.

Adm. Mountbatten,Supreme Allied Commander of SE Asia personally accepted the Japanese surrender in Singapore on 12 September 1945. Supreme Commander of the South Army,Field Marshall Hisaichi was gravely ill at the time of the surrender and the task was delegated to Lt.Gen. Takuma. The surrender attested the end of three years and eight months of draconian Japanese military rule.

When the British military regained Singapore on 5 September, the Straits dollar was reinstated. In response to British officials' inquiry on the total face value of invasion notes issued during the period of their occupation, the Japanese could not ascertain the amount as their resident forces were printing their own notes indiscriminately and they could only gauge by the weight of paper used in the printing. An estimate of $7~8 billion had been issued during the Japanese occupation. Within three years and eight months, the Japanese managed 30 to 40 times more than what the British had ever issued in Straits dollars! In reality, estimation by weight was grossly unreliable, for the amount printed per denomination as in $1, $5, $10, $100 and $1000 could not be determined since no records were kept. Anyhow, the brunt of the burden was brought to bear on the commonalty of Malaya and Singapore.

In Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaya, the Japanese handed over an estimate of 300 tons of invasion currency with a face value of $500 million, which the British military deemed fit for the fire. The British refusal to accredit the invasion notes had been the source of financial grief for many. According to a preliminary report by the Singapore Chinese Mobilization Council, Singapore alone had suffered a loss of $67,628,200 in Straits dollars and $270,822,000 in Japanese invasion currency.

To publicize the Allied victory over Japan and the demise of their invasion currency, certain party/parties (unknown) presumably in the British Government, overprinted the $5 JIM in bright red with "MALAYAN" at its top and "WAR SOUVENIR" below; with the huge letters "VJ" in between. "Grim Memories of 1941 - 1945" was printed in black italics across "VJ". These leaflets were airdropped by the Allies beginning 20 August 1945 and they were greeted by the gleeful cheers of the people each time they made their low level passes. The $5 JIM notes used for notification leaflet overprints had two types, one with block MK and the other block MR.

The $10,$100 and $1000 JIM notes with 'Type MR' V-J overprints could be experimental pieces,or were produced by the printers for their own amusement.They could even possibly be modern replicas. They merit attention as although these overprints were just publicity leaflets but they were printed on genuine notes and their pedigree is difficult to trace or authenticate.

MALAYA JIM NOTES-JAPANESE BANANA MONEY

Japanese Invasion Money Of Malaya.(1942-1945)

The Japanese Imperial forces landed at Kota Bahru, Kelantan, on the east coast of Malaya, on 8 December 1941. A mere two months later, General Yamashita's army had chased the British forces into Singapore island. On 15 February 1942, General Percival surrendered the island to the Japanese, and 130,000 British, Indian and Australian troops found themselves unwilling 'guests' of the Japanese army.

The Japanese Southern Money Operations swung into action and the Japanese Southern Development Bank issued replacement currencies at par-one Straits dollar. Notes were printed for denominations of 1 cent upwards and no coins were ever issued.

MA $10.00 With Serial Numbers.

Initially, the $1, $5 and $10 notes issued had engraved faces, were serially numbered in addition to having control letters (such as MA, MB, etc.) and incorporated safety features, like a kiri flower watermark and flower watermark and security threads. However, spiralling inflation, which came as the Allied troops elsewhere inched towards victory, led to serial numbers being dropped in October 1942, leaving only the control letters. Then higher denominations, like $100 and $1,000, were churned out while lower value notes declined in quality until they were finally printed on plain paper. There were two different types on $100 notes. The fist featured a native hut on the second issue (made in 1945), showed natives tapping rubber trees. This latter- issue $100 note no longer included the statement 'Promise to pay the bearer on demand'!

By 1944, inflation was at such a rate that the 1-cent, 5-cent, 10-cent, 50-cent, $1 and $5 notes were no longer considered to be of sufficient value to justify printing. After the end of Word War II, the Japanese occupation money became valueless.

Banana money and the Japanese Occupation: The $10 note, decorate with the design of a banana plant, gave rise to the name 'banana' money.

The Early Days Of Singapore Coinage.

When the East India Company obtained possession of Singapore in 1819, There was no dominant native currency. The Spanish dollar was the main unit of account, and other coins were also in circulation.

Penang Coin

The early days of the Straits Settlement of Singapore were marked by an acute shortage of currency. Indian and Penang coinage were the official standards, but merchants preferred the Spanish dollar and its lineal descendent , the Mexican silver dollar. (The high quality silver in these coins was the main reason for the merchants' preference.) In the mish-mash could also be found Peruvian, Bolivian and Hongkong silver dollars.

Singapore Merchants Tokens.

By around 1830, the shortage was so acute that the more substantial Singapore merchants were forced to import their own tokens for local circulation.

American Trade Dollar.

With official records kept in rupees and everything else done in dollars, the resulting confusion, inefficiency and public demonstrations came to a head in 1867, and the Indian coins tender (in the Straits Settlement), was repealed. From 1 April 1867, the silver-Spanish, Mexican, Peruvian, Bolivian, and Hongkong-was declared legal tender within the Straits Settlements. The American trade dollar and Japanese silver yen were added to the list in 1874.

British Trade Dollar

Representations from far traders led the British trade dollar being struck in 1895. This was legal tender in Hongkong, the Straits Settlements and Labuan. It was demonetised in 1904 after the Straits Settlements dollar was declared to be legal tender.

STRAITS SETTLEMENTS 1871 20 Cents

In addition to the various silver dollars in use as currency, the Straits Settlements government, in 1871, issued 20-,10- and 5-cent coins struck by The Royal Mint in London. These coins had the words 'QUEEN VICTORIA' with the effigy of the queen looking left. She is wearing a jewelled diadem. The reverse showed the value coin surrounded by the words 'STRAITS SETTLEMENTS' and the date-1871. A 50-cent coin was issued in 1886, but no notes were issued until 1899.

In the 90's when Malaysia local town councils start to introduce parking meter to replace parking attendants in town,you have to "feed" the parking meters yourself with coins. Each hour was charged from 30 cents to 50 cents depend on the location.But very soon the smart caveat emptors start to introduce their parking meter tokens.

These parking meter tokens were the salesman's favourite. Due to their nature of work,salesman need to use a lot of coins for "feeding" the parking meter,in order to save cost,they start to buy and use these counterfeit 50 cents coins/blanks.I was told by a ex-sales executive,they were offered RM20 for a pack of 100 pieces 50 cents blanks.You must be smart to use these forgery tokens,when you feed the parking meter with counterfeit coins,always remember the last two pieces must use the genuine 50 Cents coins,because there is "glass window" to check your coins on the parking meter.

Although I have not encounter any forgery Malaysia Buga Raya series 50 cents coins with year dated 2010 in the market,but those years dated before 2010, i.e.2009,2008,2007,2005,2004,2003,2002,2001,2000, 1998 and 1993 are still can be found.In order to remove them from the market,these are the ways of useful tips of detection of our Bunga Raya Series 50 Cents (as well as other) counterfeit coins.

Breakfast Meeting With Depankanta At KL Central.

Depankanta, a very passionate error coins blogger from Kelantan.
On 29 December.2011,2.35pm,I received a sms from Mr.Mahadevan:
"I met depankanta yesterday in Raymaond's place (Maju Junction) and he was eager to meet you."
On 30 December.2011,12.10noon,depankanta called me to inform me that he is free up to 2.00pm and wanted to visit my Dickson Niew Collection Corner at Subang Jaya. I felt very sorry to turn him down as I was on my way to attend an appointment at Jalan Ipoh.We planned to meet each other on the next morning.
On 31 December.2011,12.15am, he sms me:"Mr.Dickson, kita jumpa di KL Central jam 8.00am. ok?"
My replied:"Ok."
At 8.10am,we met at KL Central in one of the fast food outlet.He was with his friend En.Mohd.Noor.We had a solid two hours of chit-chatting before he left for Kelantan.
Although this was our first meeting,we talked like good old friend, especially when we touched on our common hobby, the error coins.We hope to meet again in near future.

Malaysia Parliament Series 5 Cents Coin With Partial Brockage Errors.

Brockage Errors can only be created when there are two planchets involved.One of the planchets will always be a struck coin that has not properly ejected from the press.This struck coin will find its way back between the dies and either the obverse or the reverse will be struck into a blank planchet that is subsequently fed into the collar.The image of the struck coin will be impressed into the blank planchet,the result of which will be a second struck coin with the proper image on one side and an incuse,inverted image of the previously struck coin on the other.This incuse,inverted image is a brockage.
