A portion of the planchet from the rim inward missing,usually in a fairly straight line but having a very jagged edge on the affected area.

This is caused by a punch touching the end of the metal strip when punching blanks.

If the line is very irregular in shape and comes significantly into the planchet it is known as a defective planchet rather than a ragged clip. 

How to detect a genuine clip errors and a counterfeits?(Man-made)
Always pay attention to the rim right opposite/across the affected area. The rim will always exhibits an imperfect or deformed rim,this is due to the affected area could  not respond the force of the upsetting or upended process to raise the rim.This phenomenon was best explained by Mr.Blakesley, hence,is also called Blakesley Effects.
