Question:
What do the terms "relief" and "incuse" mean on a Malaysia coin?

Answer:
The two terms are direct opposites.

A relief design is one that is raised above the field of a coin, like the design of hibiscus flower on the reverse of our current "BUNGA RAYA" coin series. This is the same as a relief map, which shows the elevation of different points on the ground surface.

An incuse design is one which is below the field surface.A good example of this is the incused lettered edge, the "BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA" of our Malaysia 50 Cents coin or the 1971 to 1986 One Dollar Malaysia coin.
