MALAYSIA 50 CENTS COUNTERFEITS

Malaysia.1998 to 2009.50 Cents.
Counterfeit Coins.
(Dickson Niew Collection)
"I found my first 'fake' 2005 50 cents coin."

Dear Dickson
Hi Mr Ngoh, how are you?You are welcom!
I found my first 'fake' 2005 50 cents coin.  It came among hundreds
of coins my son brought back from KL over the weekend.
You can find these counterfeit 50 cents coins from year 1998,1999,
2000,2001,2003,2004,2005,2007 and 2009.A lot were issued in year 2005.

It is not magnetic.
I have collected year 1998,1999,2000,2001,2004,and 2005 of Malaysia 50 Cents counterfeits coins that can be attracted to magnets.

It is thinner and weighs 8.0 grams.
Yes,it is always lighter than the original 50 cents which is weight: 9.33gm.
The diameter is the same.
Yes.
Edge letters are of different font.
You can find they are various fonts,I think they have more than one die to strike the counterfeit coins.
There are dots both obv and rev.
These are the blisters due to imperfect plating.
The finer designs of the wau was altered.
Unless they use the laser cutting technology to copy and produce the dies.

Alignments of letters are not exacting especially seen from the
'50' perspective.
Yes.

The bunga raya is grainy.
Yes,I think it is due low quality dies, repaired dies, recut dies or  imperfect plating.Sometimes, only can be seen more clearly under 10X magnifying glass.
Other than the above the finishing is actually quite good with a nice
smooth and silvery planchet.
If we see with normal naked eyes, sometimes they appeared to be even better looked than our normal 50 cents in circulation. You may mistaken it in BU condition.

I will try to send you the pics.
You have been very observant, very good attitude indeed for a numismatist, keep it up!Cheers!

Best regards,
Dickson Niew
Regards.

  1. Hi Dickson,
No doubt you've mentioned that the faked coins always weigh less than the genuine ones.
But any possibility where the fake and genuine coins having the same weight?
Because the intrinsic value of the copper and nickel even in the genuine blanks are still very much less than the face value of the coin.
    Thanks a lot, Dickson :)

  2. Hi whycollect!
The faked coins always weigh less than the genuine ones, but sometimes not true. The earlier counterfeits and restrikes dragon coins produced in Taiwan weight heavier than the original dragon coins because they don't have the skill to produce .925 silver,.800 silver or .500 silver,so all their counterfeits dragon coins with scarce date were produced in 99.9 silver, which are heavier in weight.
End of last year when the nickel hits more than USD 10,000.00 per ton,we make a calculation on the cost of producing our 50 Cents,it will cost more than 60 cents to produce one piece of our 50 cents coin.
The new Malaysia 50 cents will be produced in the size of EURO Dollar and material likely is using the Aluminium Brass. This is what I hearsay!
