Malaysia Bunga Raya Series 50 Cents Counterfeit Coins
(Dickson Niew Collection)
Do you know that a lot of  Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins are still in circulation?
Since when (which year) the first issue of  Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins were minted?
How do you detect the different between an original Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents coin and a counterfeits?
Why the Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins still in circulation are not easy to be detected?
Pic.1 Plated Layer Peeled.

My discovery:
Pic.2:Blurred & Flaws
Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins were minted since 1998.It was a Die-Struck Counterfeits. A die-struck counterfeit coin is the most difficult of all counterfeits to detect because it's struck with two dies, just like a genuine coin minting process.Even some leading coin dealers are unable to distinguish every die-struck counterfeit coin.Being able to detect a die-struck counterfeit requires many years of experience and study.

Pic.3:Concentric Lines.
These Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins were minted on  Planchet make of recycle brass and plated with tin. When the plated layer of the coins peeled off (Pic.1)after in circulation for sometime, you can see the brass surfaced. These coins are always lighter in weight. The details of the coins are blur (Pic.2) on both the obverse and the reverse. It also exhibits a concentric lines (Pic.3) of design, blisters & flaws (Pic.4) on the field of the coins.

Pic.4:Blisters & Flaws.
Because these Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins were struck with two dies, just like a genuine coin in minting process,it aslo exhibits some of the mint errors of the genuine coins.Mint errors like Wrong Metal Errors,Defective Planchet Errors (Pic.5),Rotated Die errors,Die Crash Errors,Die Crack Errors(Pic.8),Die Chip Errors,Die Gouge Errors,Collar Die Strike Errors,Fill Die Errors(Pic.7),Worn Die Errors,Polished Die Errors/Repaired Die Errors (Pic.6)Etc.

Pic.5:Deffective Planchet.
However,l have not encounter any of the Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins come with Planchet Errors like Lamination errors,Split Planchet Errors,Curve Clip Errors,Straight Clip Errors,Rim Clip Errors,Ragged Clip Errors Or Striking Errors like Strike Through Errors,Brockage  Errors, Broadstrike Errors,Off-Center Strikes Errors,Double Struck Errors, and Die Cap Errors.

Pic.6:Repaired Die Errors.
So far,l have collected  the Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins minted in year:
1998,1999,2000,2001,2003,2004,2005,2007 and 2009.
Rare years are 1999 and 2001.
No issues in year 2002,2006  and 2008.
(No Issue For Original 50 cents in 2006).
I found some of these Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins minted in year 1999,2001 and 2005 were attracted to magnet. There were rare pieces.
Pic.7:Filled Die Errors
Why the Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins was minted from year 1998?
Is it because these counterfeiters were busy minting the more profitable Malaysia Copper-Nickel One Dollar/Ringgit "Gold" coins until they were out of business when the Bank Negara Malaysia decided to discontinued the circulation of these "Gold" coins in 1997.

Pic.8:Die Crack Errors
In don't see any of these  Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins minted after year 2009.
Is it the cost of the raw material (intrinsic value) of planchet are too expensive to produce the coins in year 2010?
Or the authority are taking stern actions against them?
Or they found a more profitable counterfeit Crown Size Silver Trade Dollars to produce and not against the law?

Some of the Malaysia Bunga Raya series 50 cents counterfeit coins that I had collected, there were in uncirculated (UNC) and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition. There looked much better in condition compare with the original pieces, unless you placed them under the ten times magnifing glass.
