IN GOD WE TRVST ?

In God We Trvst Or In God We Trust?

United States "Peace" dollar

In God we Trvst.....? Why do some old United States silver dollar coins, such as my 1922 silver dollar say "In God we Trvst"  instead of "In God we Trust"?

The motto "In God we Trust" on the United States "Peace" dollar is normal with the spelling that looks like "In God we Trvst".The alphabet 'V' is used instead of 'U' is what we called the architectural alphabet. The most common language used on coin worldwide inscription is Latin, and in Latin the letters "U" and "V" are the same. This is totally normal in "Peace" dollar.

During the early part of the 20th century, there was sort of a "roman revival" in things like art and architecture. One of the ways it manifested itself was for inscriptions to follow the Roman custom of using "V" for "U", and "I" for "J". Anthony de Francisci, who designed the "Peace" dollar that I have, just followed that custom. In fact, the quarter that was in use at the same time had "In God We Trvst" and "E Plvribus Vnvm"on it for the same reason. All dollars of that design are minted with "Trvst" on them. A friend of mine from Seremban , Negeri Sembilan ,who is a coin collector told me that he has a US rare coin because it says "Trvst".
