Brunei Large Umbrella Type One Pitis (One Cent) 1285 A.H. (1868)
Rarity:RR. SS49 (a).
This is another piece of Brunei umbrella type tin coin that I acquired from Mr. Steven Tan ,One of the seven recipients of the MNS Award Pakar Numismatik Malaysia (PNM) on 3rd December,1989 and the author of The Standard Catalogue Of Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei Coin & Paper Money, published by International Stamp & Coin Sdn Bhd, but better known as Steven Tan Catalogue.
Brunei Umbrella type one Pitis (One Cent) tin coin issued in 1285 A.H.(1868) with larger planchet measured 29mm in diameter and weight at 11.20 gm. It has a plain edge, with the obverse similar to the Half Pitis, i.e.(Yellow) State Umbrella, part of the insignia of the Malay Royalty, surmounted by the Sultan's (yellow) flag facing left with the wing of four feathers "Sayap" below. (The Sayap is a traditional symbol of the duty of the State to protect tranquility,justice,peace and prosperity.Reverse showed "Inilah tirah Kamuafakatan ka'atas belanja Negri Brunei tarikh fi 1285" or in English it reads "By order of the administration of the finances of Brunei date 1285 A.H.=1868)
It has several varieties,the main ones are listed below,viz
SS49 (a) Flag above the umbrella facing left: the two rosettes below the Sayap with six petals.
SS49 (b) Flag above the umbrella facing left: the two rosettes below the Sayap with eight petals.
SS49 (c) Flag above the umbrella facing right: the two rosettes below the Sayap with six petals
