STRAITS COIN 1889 20 CENTS OVER 1/2 CENT
Straits Settlements 20 Cents Over 1/2 Cent Copper Coin 1889.
Rarity:RRR
I had seen many Straits Settlements forgery coins, there were dated 1801,1816,1824, 1849, 1863, 1883,1884,1899,1901,1910,1916,1932 .....ended with year 1961H. There were with different denomination, from 1/4 Cent, 2/4 Cent, 3/4 Cent, 1/2 Cent, 1 Cent .....to a dollar.
This was a piece of original uncirculate 1889 1/2 Cent copper coin but was impaired by chiseling
a "20" figure to cover the "1/2" cent denomination. I had seen couple of such impaired coins but usually were the 1916 1/2 cent copper coins. Some coins were even plated with tin to give a silver look. This is my first encountered on a 1/2 cent 1889 copper coin.
Imagine on those days, they were people taking all the troubles to do such thing just to cheat an extra of 19 1/2 cents on a 1/2 cent coin. I was told, these unscrupulous people were try their luck using such repaired coins when nightfall to buy a packet of cigarette cost 5 cents from old ladies at the five foot way and hoping to get a change of 15 cents in return.
Today a piece of uncirculate original 1/2 cent 1889 copper coin is priced at RM1,800 in "Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore Banknotes and Coins" catalog by KN Boon. They should just leave it alone.
