1997 50 CENTS STRAIGHT CLIPPED PLANCHET ERROR COIN
Malaysia Bunga Raya Series 1997 50 Cents With Straight Clipped Planchet Errors.
Rarity:RRR
It has been quite a while I have not seen a Straight Clipped Planchet Error coin. Among the Clipped Planchet Error Coins, i.e. the Curve Clipped Planchet Error coins, Rim Clipped Planchet Error coins or Irregular Clipped Planchet Error coins, the Straight Clipped Coins are more difficult to obtain.
HOW IS A STRAIGHT CLIPPED PLANCHET ERROR COIN OCCURS?
The Straight Clipped Error occurs in the process of cutting blanks from metal strip. When cutting blanks long strips of metal are fed through a machine which cuts the blanks from the metal strip. When the strip runs out it is possible for a blank to be cut when they is not enough metal strip left creating an incomplete blank with a straight edge. Then if it is not removed through the quality control process it will be struck into a coin and a small number of these reach circulation.
If the metal strip shifts during the punching process and the punches overlap the straight side edge of the strip, a straight area of metal will be missing from the planchet. A straight clip appears on a coin as a straight edge. Not all straight edges are straight clips, however.
The edge texture of a straight clip is highly variable. It can be smooth, rough, irregular, or serrated in some fashion. This probably reflects a variety of machines employed for the task — shears, saws, guillotines are three possibilities.
The below images illustrate metal flow and the taper and fadeout of the design rim. This is what we would expect to see when dealing with authentic straight clips
