A filled die is a very common form of minor error and does not add significant numismatic value to the coin. Filled die error coin are known on almost every series and denomination of Malaysia coin struck by Malaysia Mint.

A filled die occurs when grease, dirt, ferrous dust or metal particles compact into a die.

The dies that strike coins are recessed so that when they strike a planchet, the metal of the planchet rises to fill in the die. That is why letters, numbers, words and designs are raised on coins.

If the recesses of the die fill up with sludge, which is very common occurrence in a factory like the Mint, this sludge will prevent letters or numbers from forming during the strike.

This would have approximate retail value of between RM5.00 to RM 20.00 to an interested error collector, depending on the date, denomination and condition of the error coin.

  1. Hi Dickson,
    Nice article.
This will be very useful for our reference.
And we really welcome the estimated value of the error coin in question.
These values are equally useful guides.
Mind if we make a kind request.
Hope you can include the estimated values in your write-ups regarding error coins in future.
    Thanks a lot, Dickson :)
