Chinese New Year -Chap Goh Meh,The Yuanxiao Festival On 6-2-2012.

Whycollect started the Chinese New Year 2012 with his China Silver Dragon coin, I am going to end the Chinese New Year- the Chap Goh Meh Festival with a China Silver Dragon coin from my collection.

Chap Goh Meh Festival also known as the Yuanxiao Festival or Shangyuan Festival in China.

CHINA.1908 XF DETAILS. OBVERSE.
'Chap Goh Meh' is a Hokkien dialect which means 'Fifteenth Night' is a significant celebration in Malaysia. Over the past years, various activities would be put up to celebrate this auspicious day including sumptous feasting, culture shows, lion dance, dragon dance, lantern lighting and the highlight of the night - tangerines tossing.
Tangerines or Mandarin oranges toss is a traditional culture popularized by South East Asia Chinese as a means for a single lady to find for her life partner. In the past several decades, the maidens would ride along coastal roads to toss the oranges into the sea with the wish to find a good spouse.

CHINA.1908 XF DETAILS. REVERSE.

Chap Goh Meh Festival was also the only night of the year that the unmarried women were allowed to meet up or went on a date with their sweethearts. So this festival is also regarded as the Chinese version of St. Valentine's Day, a day celebrating love and affection between lovers in Chinese tradition and culture.

  1. Hi Dickson,
Wah, like that also must follow lor...must put up something relating to dragon in our next posting lor, haha.
First of all, before we proceed further, our sincere thanks to you and your family, and wishing you all the same as well.
Back to your silver dragon, phiit...nowadays any genuine silver dragon from China is highly desirable.
Aiya, Dickson, you make us feel like chasing the dragon la, haha, don't ever ever try, its illegal and dangerous...we are just writing it as an analogy to describe our high desire towards these dragon coins.
Though dragons are considered a clash of cultures between the east and west, eastern people like us have very high reverence for the legendary creature.
Some of the recent happenings already proven that....wonder anyone has a good rush and push at the post office buying the dragon stamps lately...and to our surprise a block of the current china dragon stamps sells for more than 200 ringgit by the local dealers...wah real crazy over dragons.
By the way, Chap Goh Meh, no need throw orange lor, just tell us beforehand when you want to throw this coin for good wish, ok, hahaha ;D

  6. Hi Dickson,
Haha, though we know that we would not be able to catch those 50senters physically, but the kind thoughts are more than enough to touch our hearts.
Its always the thoughts that matter most :D
    Thanks for the kind regards.
As for the dragon, we are thinking of a way to lure it into our home, hehehe.
Remember, before you throw orange, must check the person first, otherwise your orange may land into the hands on a man, hahaha.
