GEOFFREY COLLEY,"GC", DESIGNER OF MALAYSIA FIRST SERIES COINS

Missing "GC", The Initials Of Geoffrey Colley

Malaysia first series of coins or we used to call the Parliament series (1967 -1988) were designed by Geoffrey Colley whose initials "GC" appear on the obverse of the coin below the Parliament House.

We used to encounter some of these  Malaysia first series coins without the Geoffrey Colley initials.

Malaysia.1973.50 Cents,No "GC" Obverse
Malaysia.1973.50 Cents,No "GC" Reverse
They are several reasons why the "GC" initials are missing.

Firstly ,it can be a Filled Die Varieties, the dies were filled up by metal dust or grease after million times of striking.
Secondly, it was a Strike Through Errors, the coins were minted by a die struck through some foreign objects or grease which covered the design of "GC" initials.
Thirdly, it was a by product of Die Clash Errors, the dies were damaged when there is no planchet present in between the hammer die and the bottom die.Likely the "GC" design was flattened by the impact of the struck.
Lastly, it can also struck without "GC" initials by a Worn Die.

  1. Hi Dickson,
Oh, now we know why we cannot find a perfectly well struck coin without the GC.
Thanks a lot for the useful info, Dickson:)
