TRIP TO SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL COIN FAIR 2014
Singapore International Coin Fair 2014 (March 28-30)
I arrived at Singapore Changi Airport at 11.30am, 29-3-2014. This was the first time I took the Singapore MRT at Changi Terminal to go to Singapore International Coin Fair 2014 at Sands Expo & Convention Center Marina Bay Sands.
Mr.Wong Hon Sum, the Ex-President of Asia Numismatic Society Singapore, Mr.John Goh, President of Sibu Numismatic Society (Sarawak), Mr. Ng Ah Lee of Ng Coin Selangor, Mr Ling from Miri Sarawak were at the registration counter waiting for me to have lunch together.
This was a very fruitfull trip to me. I met many senior numismatists and new coin collectors at the coin fair. There were Mr. Kok Seng Huat President of Asia Numismatist Society Singapore, Mr. Oh, Mr.Sum, Miss Lisa Leong,Ah Ling, Mr Gao Da Siong at the Asia Numismatist Society Singapore counter.
I went over to our Malaysia Numismatic Society counter to meet up with Mr.Lawrence De Souza, the newly elected First Vice President and the Honorary Treasurer of MNS Mr.Tok Hong Kian who was returned unopposed recently.
I met King Banknote Collection boss Mr.Tan and Ah Siong, K.S.Koh Collection, Puchong.Next to them is Mr.Govin of U.S. Agency,Ipoh. Khoo Brothers from Khoo Collections Enterprise.JB. Mr.Tan from Tan Coin Trading Penang. I also met some very serious Singapore numismatist Mr. Lawrence Chew, Mr.Y.K.Fong, Mr.Kevin Wan, Mr.Vincent Tan.
I am glad also to meet Mr. Jit An and Mr.Mateo Zhao, Business Development Director of Certified Collectibles Group, NGC,PMG. Mr.T.S.Sinnathuray CEO,Mr.Eric Low (Co.Secretary), Mr. David Wee (Director) and Mr.Jack Ong (Consultant) of Mavin International Pte.Ltd. Mr. Anthony boss of Monetarium (Singapore) Pte.Ltd. Mr.Quek and Mr. K.N.Boon of Trigometric Sdn.Bhd. Mr Justin Chan of MOEM Malaysia. Mr.Adwin Cheah of Word Replacement/Star Notes Specialist. I was also lucky to meet PCGS Representative at their booth.
I met Prof. Dr.Selvaraj Y Subramaniam, a serious collector of Malay States coinage. Mr. James Lye was attending the coin fair too. Among my Blog visitors that I met were Mr.Chiu,Miss Michell Lee and Mr. Drawis Munshi.
The hottest topic that many people were asking me in this trip is why the price of Malaysia modern coins and banknotes are so high now ?
Hope to see you all again in the next fair.

Dickson, thanks for sharing. Just bought the KN Boon 2014 Book. I was astounded by the sky-rocketing prices of the Malaysian Parliament House and Bunga Raya series of coins in UNC and BU condition when compared with the prices in the 2012 Edition. Has the hobby of coin collecting now become a long-term investment portfolio for knowledgeable collectors and investors?
ReplyDeleteMy two cent, the Malaysia modern are so high coz there are more hoarders than collectors. Everybody is hoping these coins will fetch high price in future. The Malaya coins are good example, what happen to their price.
ReplyDeleteWished I could have been there... thanks for sharing photos hope to see more of the coins on offer. TQ!
ReplyDeleteI realised the new collectors are instantly become investors. They collect more then one piece of the same coin. They are young and having stronger holding capability then the earliar collectors.
ReplyDeleteThese young or new collectors are quick to pick up latest numismatic news from social networks from internet. They "learn" much faster then my days. They believed the third party grading like NGC,PCGS ang PMG.They do not need to learn grading on a raw coin or banknote during our days. They just pay and they can afford to pay for high graded coins and banknotes.
The very high realised prices in a few past auctions on high graded items had also encourage many new comers.
Happy numismatics!
The price of graded coins are already on the high side. What percentage of profit can you get. No doubt they can afford but they are overcome by greed. Collect because you enjoy collecting. ENJOY :)
Deleteaaronapng,
ReplyDeleteNice to have you around and dropping by.Hope to see you in the next coin fair.Cheers.
There are still gems to be discovered in the Parliment and Bunga Raya series. Try to think harder for the undiscovered gems.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, as Dickson's blog does not permit me to sign off in any way other than as Anonymous (incidentally I made the first comment), I will sign off as Anon1 in any comment I make here in future. Yes, you are right. There are still gems in the PH and the BR series, but it is very difficult. For example, try finding a 50 Sen 1989 in EF is difficult enough. Anon1.
ReplyDeleteAnon 1, Finding is one thing discovering is another. Better discover the gems now before it fetch a high price and everybody going after them and pushes the price even higher. Anon 2 ;-)
DeleteAnon1,
ReplyDeleteWelcome Anon1.
Coins minted in 1985 of PH to 1996 of BR are not easy to collect in high grade, because these periods of 10 years no new dealers and very few new collectors come into this hobby, hence not many pieces of coins during these period are collect and keep in mint condition.
Anon2, thanks for your insightful comment. But alas I fully understand that there is a world of difference between finding and discovering. For example, why would an astute collector or investor wants to share his secret (discovering) of what are the likely gems? If mintage is an indication of potential gems, then all of the low mintage in the PH and BR series are already fetching high prices today. These coins have already been 'discovered' a long time ago by the astute investors. Still I believe these low mintage in UNC and BU will still go up even higher in a few years time. No doubt, all astute collectors are already well aware of that. Also I think collecting a reasonable quantity of all other PH & BR coins in UNC and BU especially in the 50 Sen and 20 Sen series now would be a sure bet in the future. The logic is simple enough. PH and BR series are no longer minted and eventually be withdrawn from circulation. Rdgs Anon1.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous,
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your good comments.Cheers!
