ASTRO HISTORY CHANNEL 555 FILM ON MALAYSIA 1966 TRIAL PATTERN COINS
The Astro History Channel 555 Film Production On The Set Of 10 Animal Series Trial Pattern Coins Of Malaysia.
Today, My Dickson Niew Collection at Subang Jaya was closed in the morning until 2.00pm for Astro History Channel 555 on filming on the topic of our Malaysia set of 10 pieces unissued, unrecorded uniface Animal Series Trial Pattern coins intended for general circulation in 1967.
However, the set of Animal Series of coin was abandoned when our first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman decided to replace the picture on the obverse of the coins with the Parliament Building. Why?
The focus of the filming was on the idea prompted by our Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to produce a set of new coins for our general circulation when Singapore splited with us on the 9th of August 1965. So in February of 1966, BNM given the task to the Art Council of Malaysia to invite the public to submit designs of coin for different denomination as part of nation-wide competition. The competition attracted a tremendous amount of interest among local artists and the response was so great that the judges had a difficult task choosing the winning designs.
For more details, please watch this regional series on Astro History Channel 555 on the 12th of September 2014.
