Many of the inhabitants of Tanjung Pinang of kepulauan Riau (Riau Archupelago) had their roots traced to the ancient sultanate of Johore.These descendants of the sultanate were still in residence during the occupation which was under the control of Japan syonan Military Administration. The Japanese were especially magnanimous towards them.When the Indonesia Trading Company was set up on 23 march 1942,portion of the shares of the company were distributed among these Malays of the island.
