SIAMESE SINGGORA TIN COIN

Siamese Singgora/Songkhla Tin Coin With Arabic Inscription.
In the 18th century many Chinese immigrants, especially from Guangdong and Fujian, came to the province. Quickly rising to economic wealth, one of them won the bidding for the major tax farm of the province in 1769, establishing the Na Songkhla (i.e. 'from Songkhla') family as the most wealthy and influential.

In 1777 the family also gained political power, when the old governor was dismissed and Luang Inthakhiri (Yiang), Chinese name Wu Rang (呉譲)) became the new governor. In 1786 the old governor started an uprising, which was however put down after four months. The post was inherited in the family and held by 8 of his descendants until 1901, when Phraya Wichiankhiri (Chom) was honorably retired as part of the administrative reforms of Prince Damrong Rajanubhab.

This is a small piece (only 24mm in diameter) of 1809 A.D. unlisted Singgora Tin Pitis which I collected recently. It was not listed in the book named "Siamese Coins From Funan to the Fifth Reign" authored by Mr.Ronachai Krisadaolarn and my friend Mr.Vasilijs Mihailovs.

Obverse: In Arabic " Malik Al Adil" ( The Just Ruler). It is very similar to the Terengganu's Pitis. It exhibits three dots under the Arabic inscription " Al Adil".

Reverse :In Siamese " song khla " (Singgora).

Edge : Plain.(2.5mm)
Diameter: 24mm ( Size of Malaysia 20 Cents Coin).
Weight:11.33gm.
Thickness: 2.5mm.

I need more information about this Singgora tin coin, you are most welcome to contribute!

I will discuss this piece with Ronachai Krisadaolarn on Friday. I have
never seen anything similar to that. The Thai script does say
"Songkhla"; the Jawi script spells "Malik Al-Adil" with a couple of
script mistakes, suggesting that the coin might have been produced in
what is Thailand today, not in Malaysia. I will follow up on this coin -
if genuine (and so far it looks genuine to me), this is a very
interesting specimen. Can you send me the picture files by email please,
along with weight and diameter?

Are you coming to the Bangkok auction this weekend by chance?

Best regards - Vasilijs

SIFU-SIFU NUMISMATIC VISITING DNCS (28-7-2014)

Malaysia Senior Numismatists Visited Dickson Niew Collection Shop On Hari Raya Day.
Yesterday, was the first day of Hari Raya Adil Fitri holiday, it falls on Monday.I thought of taking a day off to visit my Muslim friends. After making a few calls, I found that most of them were back to kampong. Then I decided to have breakfast with my senior sifus, Master Tan Tain Seng and Master Tony Au. When I picked them from their home at OUG, Jalan Klang Lama and Jalan Ipoh , they wanted to visit my Dickson Niew Collection Shop (DNCS) at Subang Jaya. We had a good breakfast together.
Master Tan Tai Seng, he is very experience on old coins and Malay States Sultanate coins. He is a very senior member of Malaysia Numismatic Society (MNS). He is also a Pakar Numismatic Malaysia (PNM).

Master Tony Au, a founder member of Malaysia Numismatic Society. He is also a very senior numismatist and specialize on error coins and Straits Settlements coinage.

I learnt a lot from both of them since I started to become a coins collector in 2007. We used to meet up almost every Saturday at Mr Bob Chew's shop at UE3, Jalan Cheras.(Mr. Bob Chew is also a PNM). Later we used to meet up at Berjaya Times Square when Mr. Bob Chew moved to the 7th floor of Berjaya Times Square at Jalan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur.

Now, both of them are having arthritis problem, difficult to walk around. I try my very best to pick them up for breakfast or tea at least once a week or fortnightly. I do hope they are always healthy and can share their endless, very worthy experiences on numismatics with us.

GOLD KUPANG TERENGGANU-DEBASED

Malaya Sultanate Terengganu Debased Gold Kupang.
Terengganu Coins (1700-1921)
Terengganu was an important trading centre in the 14th century. Gold Mas and Kupang coins were minted in Terengganu. There appears to have been only three varieties of the gold coins. The first, a gold Kupang, was dated 1120 Ah (1708). The second variety consisted of an octagonal gold Mas and the third, a gold Kupang; both of these are undated.

Prior to 1700, the States of Terengganu consisted of numerous petty chiefdoms claimed by the rulers of Johore as part of their territories inherited from the former Malacca Empire. The Terengganu Sultanate was founded in 1700, when Zainal Abidin Shah, the Sultan of Johore’s younger half-brother, was installed as its ruler.

Only three varieties of gold coins are attributed to Terengganu. These were issued during one or two reigns. Both the emas and the kupang, minted in the octagonal shape, closely resembled the Johore trading currency. Octagonal gold emas and kupang coins were first issued in 1708/9 by Zainal Abidin Shah I, the first Sultan of Terengganu.

Around 1870, with the permission of the Sultan, the Chinese headmen or Kapitans were also permitted to issue monetary tokens known as Jokoh, for use in their areas of jurisdiction and gambling houses. The ability of these Kapitans to issue pewter Jokoh depended on the confidence of the public in the issuers’ ability to exchange the tokens for silver dollars on demand.
This is a piece of debased Terengganu "Gold" Kupang. Written in Arabic on the Obverse is "Sultan Zainal Abidin Shah", on the Reverse also written in Arabic is "Khalifatul Muminin 1120". My sifus told me that it looked like a debased (Gold + Copper or Silver in composition) and  a casted coin. It is a contemporary counterfeit coin, its weight is 0.35gram.They have seen a Patani-Kelantan Kijang, a Kedah and a Johore Kupang debased coins before, they were the casted contemporary forgeries "Gold" Kupang.
