Malaysia VVIP Proof Coins Set (10 pieces)1967 - 1972

MALAYSIA COINS 1970 MINTED IN HAMBERT MINT

Malaysia 1 Cent & 20 Cents (1970) Coins Minted At Hamburg Mint, Germany.
The Hamburg Mint (Hamburgische Münze) has been producing coinage since the 9th century and is thus the oldest coin-minting site in Germany. As one of the five state-owned mints, the Hamburg Mint now produces a proportion of all the Euro coins for the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as foreign currencies, special coins, collectors’ coins and medals. The specialists at the Hamburg Mint are leaders in the field of design and production of special coins and individual medals. It is possible to design and create high-grade medals – for collectors, for advertising purposes and for your individual wishes – even for just one coin.
Only two denominations of coin in Malaysia Parliament House series were minted by Hamburg Mint, in Germany. There were the One Cent Copper Coin with total mintage of 2,535,000 pieces and the 20 Cents Copper-Nickel coin minted for a total of 1,054,00 pieces. Both were considered a key date coin by local coin collectors.
RESTRIKE PATTERN Ni-PLATED STEEL PLANCHET
Why only these two denominations ?
Why there were minted by the Hamburg Mint in Germany?
Why no more other denominations from the Parliament series are minted after 1970 by Hamburg Mint?
Why the total of mintage were so low, only 2.54 million pieces for One Cent Copper coin and 1.05 million pieces for the 20 Cents Copper-Nickel coins?
Could it be there is a period of transition lapsed from 1969 to 1971,when our Kilang Wang Batu Tiga,Shah Alam was not ready yet to mint coin ourself?

JOHOR SULTAN MUZAFFAR SHAH UNLISTED GOLD KUPANGS

Johor Sultan Muzaffar Shah (1564-1570) Unlisted Gold Kupangs
Rarity: RRRR/Unlisted

During my recent trip to Singapore, again I was very lucky to be given a chance by a very senior and famous Singapore numismatist, to see two pieces of his extremely RARE collection of Johor Sultan Muzaffar Shah (1564-1570) Gold Kupang.
To my surprised, both pieces of his Johor Sultan Muzaffar Shah (1564-1570) Gold Kupang are not listed in Master Saran Singh book "The Encyclopaedia of THE COINS OF MALAYSIA-SINGAPORE-BRUNEI 1400-1967".
The first  piece of his Johor Sultan Muzaffar Shah (1564-1570) Gold Kupang is similar to SS4 (MAS) with the obverse inscription in Arabic " Sultan Muzaffar Shah" and reverse "Khalifatul Muminin", both inscriptions are not in reverse (mirror script) like SS5. Its weight is 0.62gm, diameter  measured at 12.00mm and in octagonal shape.
The second Gold Kupang that he showed it to me is also similar to SS4 (MAS) with the obverse inscription in Arabic " Sultan Muzaffar Shah" and reverse "Khalifatul Muminin", both inscriptions are not in reverse (mirror script) like SS5. Its weight is 0.60gm, diameter  measured at 12.00mm but the shape  is in round shape. Very rare.
Sultan Muzaffar Shah II (1546–1570) was the second Sultan of Johor. He was known as Raja Muda Perdana before he succeeded the throne. He was installed to the throne of Johor in 1564 by the Acehnese upon the death of his father, Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah II, who died shortly after he was captured and brought back to Aceh after the Acehnese invasion of Johor.

Muzaffar II moved his capital to Seluyut in 1565 from Johor Lama to assert his independence from the Acehnese. He died in 1570 of poison and was succeeded by Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah I.

He had three wives, which was not uncommon among Muslim rulers at the time. His first wife was Tun Mas Jiwa, daughter of the temenggung, Tun Hassan. His second wife was Tun Trang, daughter of Tun Ali, Seri Nara Diraja of Pahang and Tun Fatimah. Tun Trang bore him two sons, Abdul Jalil I and Raja Radin. His third wife was the former wife of Sultan Ali Jalla Abdul Jalil Shah II and daughter of Sultan Husain Ali Riayat Shah of Aceh.

SPECIMEN COIN OF KING GEORGE VI 20 CENTS 194X

Malaya King George VI 194X 20 Cents Specimen Coin.
Rarity: Specimen
Few days ago, an anonymous of my Blog visitor send to me some images of this Malaya King George VI (KG VI) 20 Cents dated 194X.
Specimen
It was transmitted via his/her hand set, the quality of the photos were not so good. I could not enlarge them to a bigger image due to its low resolution.

On the obverse of the coin , a "SPECIMEN" wording was struck vertically or up right position on the left side of the KG VI portrait. On the right, is a figure of number "9".
On the reverse, the year was dated as 194_.The last digit was not indicated. This indicates that it was struck for the purpose of a specimen coin. In my research, if the year is struck with a full "date", this coin will be a legal tender piece automatically.
A specimen coin is a brilliant image relief  struck against a planchet in order to achieve maximum visual impact. Specimen coins are struck up to two times on numismatic presses.

Specimen is used to describe any coin produced to a particularly high standard of finish. Used frequently before the 1970s, most of these coins would now be called proof quality. In recent years, some mints have produced especially good versions of its uncirculated coins which they call specimens. These are ordinary uncirculated coins which have been handled individually and with greater than normal care, to avoid most, but not all, of the surface blemishes which occur due to bulk handling. In that regard they would be very similar to brilliant uncirculated or FDC coins.

FDC: An abbreviation for "fleur-de-coin" (flower of the die). Similar to an uncirculated coin, but without marks from the minting process as FDC coins are largely prevented from touching other coins during manufacturing.

I hope the anonymous will supply me with more information.

Happy Sunday to all numismatists!

MALAYSIA 1971 10 SEN GRADED MS 65 PROOF LIKE.

Malaysia Parliament House Series 1971 10 Sen Graded NGC MS65PL.
Rarity: Unique.
Last week, one of my senior numismatic friend came to visit my Dickson Niew Collection shop at Subang Jaya. He told me he has a rare 1971 10 sen coin and was graded by NGC with a MS65 grading. I replied to him, this is no more a great news because out of almost touching 1,000 pieces (or even exceeded now) graded by NGC, there were more than hundred pieces graded MS65 and another hundred pieces graded with MS66.
He smiled and said his piece is very unique, because it was graded as MS65 PL (PROOF LIKE). This indeed surprised me. This is the first time I came across our Malaysia 1971 10 sen coin graded with such label. I challenged him to show me the coin.
Yesterday, he showed up at my Dickson Niew Collection shop and handed over the "Proof Like" graded 1971 10 sen coin to me, it was encapsulated by NGC grading house. I was a bit puzzled when I saw the labeling, and when I took a close looked on the encapsulated coin, to my opinion it was just a normal 1971 10 sen variety 2 (V2) coin. Through my Dickson Niew grading services, I had sent more then 50 pieces of 1971 10 sen proof like V2 coins to NGC, none was graded with "PL" grading. My this numismatic friend is too lucky.

Malaysia Parliament Series 1978 20 Cents NGC Graded MS67.
Rarity:RRR
It is always a normal phenomenon that we only remembered and focus on Number 1.
In this case, the 20 Cents in the Malaysia Parliament House Series, we only focus on the 1970, 20 Cents, because it was minted by Hamburg Mint in Germany with a total mintage of 1,054,000 pieces only.It is one of the lowest in total mintage among the 20 Cents coins in Parliament House  Series  hence it becomes the key dates among the Malaysian Numismatists.
The second lowest in total mintage among the 20 Cents coins in Parliament House Series is in year 1978,the total mintage is only 6,847,062 pieces followed by third lowest is 1971 (9,958,419 pieces) and the fourth lowest is in year 1969 (15,000,000 pieces).

Rarity:RR/SS12.

A very rare Malay States of Kedah and Perlis One Real silver coin issued in 1154 A.H. (1741). From its weight it may be deduced that it was intended to be the equivalent of 1 Real, or eighth part of a Spanish Silver Trade Dollar.

MALAYSIA 1976 BRONZE SEN NGC MS65RB

Malaysia Parliament House Series 1976 Bronze Sen Graded By NGC MS65RB.
Rarity:RRR
On 19th April 2014, a piece of Malaysia Parliament House Series 1976 Bronze Sen was auctioned and realized at SGD4,000 (RM11960-including 15% buyer's premium) in Collectibles Auction Asia 3/2014 in Singapore.

In Steven Tan's Coin & Paper Money Catalogue Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei (1845 To Date) First Edition published in 1976, nothing was mention about this rare bronze sen.

In his Second Edition, published in 1977, this rare Malaysia Parliament House Series 1976 Bronze Sen was mentioned for the first time in his catalogue. He mentioned that this 1976 bronze sen is less than 100 pieces known to exist, he priced it RM30 for an uncirculated coin and RM40 for a brilliant uncirculated coin.

In his Third Edition published in 1981, it had increased to RM50 for an uncirculated coin and RM60 for a brilliant uncirculated coin.

We can see a big surged on its price in the Fourth Edition of Steven Tan's catalog published in 1982. From RM50 for an uncirculated coin and RM60 for a brilliant uncirculated coin, it had increased to RM200 and RM250 respectively. However, Mr. Steven Tan's Fifth Edition catalog published one year later does not show any increment in price on this 1976 rare bronze sen.
This Malaysia Parliament House Series 1976 Bronze Sen had doubled its value on Brilliant Uncirculated coin in Steven Tan's Coin & Paper Money Catalogue Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei (1786 To 1990) Tenth Edition published in 1991.Price listed was RM350 for  an uncirculated (UNC) coin and RM500 for a brilliant uncirculated (BU) coin.

For the next 9 years, this rare 1976 bronze sen does not shown an attractive increment in price. In Steven Tan's 15th Edition (2000-2002) published in millennium 2000, it had showed only a slight increased. Prices listed were RM380 for UNC and RM600 for a BU coin.

In 2007, when Steven Tan published his 18th Edition of Coin & Paper Money Catalogue Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei (2007-2009), this rare 1976 bronze sen had increased RM270 and RM300 on its UNC and BU coin respectively to RM650 for an UNC coin and RM900 for a BU piece.

In his 19th Edition catalogue published in 2010, it further increased its value to RM800 for UNC and RM1100 for a BU coin.

Until 2012, in Steven Tan 20th Edition Catalogue, Steven Tan had specially listed price RM800 for this rare 1976 Bronze Sen in Very Find (VF) condition, RM1200 for an Extreme Fine (EF) condition, RM2500 for an UNC coin and RRR for a BU coin.
Today and for the next one year, I believed that you may need to pay RM3500 for a VF in condition coin, RM5000 for a EF condition coin, RM8000 for an UNC/MS61/MS62 graded coin ; RM11000 for a Choice UNC/MS63/MS64; RM13800 for BU/MS65;RM15000 for a graded MS66 and RM18000 to RM20000 for GEM UNC/MS67,MS68 graded pieces.

These prices likely can be achieved because they are collectors from outside Malaysia are collecting these rare 1976 bronze sen as well.
