CHINESE PRIVATE TIN CASH
Malacca Private Chinese Tin Cash (AD1400)
Rarity:RR
I bidded this Malacca private Chinese tin cash during the recent Malacca Auction which was held on 6th June 2013.
Listed as Lot: 377 in the Malacca Auction with a reserve price of RM100. I was told by Master Wong Hon Sum, this is another variety of "WU" coin. It was made of tin and weight at 1.85gm, diameter measured at 22mm.Obverse is Chinese inscription: Xian-Ping-Yuan Bao (咸平元宝) in crude font. Reverse is blank. It is a "COPY" of the Northern Song Dynasty copper cash minted in year 998. It was produced by some Chinese merchants in Malacca during or around AD1400.
I was told by Master Tan Tai Seng, most probably this is the only variety of genuine Chinese Tin Cash found in Malacca.
