MALAYSIA RARE COIN STORY:ANOTHER VERSION OF 1971 10 CENTS COIN STORY.
Latest version I heard was, there were 5,000 pieces of 1971 10 Cents coins minted in Royal London. There were minted in proof-like condition intended to make coin sets. It is possible because in the year of 1971, all denominations were minted with date 1971. There were 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, $1.00, $5.00 and $100 in gold.
However, we do not for what good reasons, the project of making 1971 coin sets was called off.
Two years ago, I was told by some senior numismatists, they said there were sample sets of 1971 coin sets made by Kuala Lumpur Royal Mint for Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to view.Since then I start my hunt to trace and track them.
Few days ago, I managed to convinced a very senior numismatist to show his genuine, original BNM 1971 coin set. He told me, so far his set is the only set known to exist.
It is a dark blue PVC plastic wallet, the BNM logo on the cover was faded but still visible. That is a paper card printed with details and technical particulars of all coins in different denominations, all coins were fully sealed in different compartments. There were aged and toned due to the PVC plastic packaging.
And when I took a close examined, the 10 Cents coin is a 3rd variety 10 cents coin.
